'A Night at the Beach' to benefit storm victims

By Bethany Bray

---- — SALEM — Head over to Collins Middle School tomorrow for “A Night at the Beach.”

The school has organized a beach-themed evening, with dinner, games and activities for families, to benefit the Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy relief. Students are decorating the cafeteria, from a paper boardwalk to painted fish to hang from the ceiling, for the event.

They’ll be serving beach-themed food, including hot dogs and hamburgers, macaroni salad, and beans. Dessert will be ice cream sundaes from Treadwell’s in Peabody.

Collins Middle School staff have donated money to cover the entire cost of the dinner, Principal Mary Manning said.

The evening’s disc jockey will be a Collins retiree, and there will be raffles of donated items, including youth bicycles. Activities for kids include shell crafts, a smoothie hut, a photo booth and face-painting.

The construction companies that are doing renovation work at Collins this year have been helping with the event, donating supplies and helping build decorations, Manning said.

The event will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person, with a maximum price of $20 per family. The school is at 29 Highland Ave.
