Crash traps woman in car wash

PEABODY — A car crashed into a light pole on Andover Street last night, sending one woman to the hospital and trapping another inside a nearby car wash when the power went out.

The accident occurred near Outback Steakhouse at 300 Andover St. just after 6 p.m. Sgt. Robert Waugh said a Ford Escape was traveling east when it struck a pole, snapping it near the top, which brought down power lines and caused a second pole nearby to snap, as well.

The driver — identified as Amanda Monteforte of Boxford — was transported to Lahey North with what were described as minor injuries. It was unclear what caused the accident and police are investigating. No citations were issued.

Power outages were reported near to the accident site, including at Maddy’s Car Wash, where an unidentified woman was briefly trapped before the Fire Department freed her, Waugh said.

“She called us from inside; we told her to stay inside the car in case the electricity came back on,” Waugh said.

State police and officers from Danvers were called to the scene to assist with traffic.
