'Spaceman' to pitch his wine in Danvers

---- — DANVERS — Famed former Red Sox lefty Bill “Spaceman” Lee plans to visit Merchants Liquor Mart on High Street to pitch his Spaceman red wine and sign autographs with fans tomorrow afternoon.

Lee was known for his off-kilter antics on and off the field pitching for the Red Sox from 1969 to 1978. His signature throw was a high-arching pitch he dubbed the “Leephus” pitch or “space ball.”

“He’s going back to his roots, and he’s obviously promoting his wine,” said Brian Campbell, co-owner of Merchants.

Campbell said Lee, a native of California, takes a hands-on approach to the wine and even picks his own grapes.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Lee’s wine goes to the Red Sox Foundation to support the Red Sox Scholars and inner-city youth baseball programs, according to the label. The venture is a partnership between Lee and a friend, Geoff Whitman.

Lee is scheduled to be at the store from 4 to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow, Brian Campbell said.
