Peabody stolen car returned with $100 bill

PEABODY — Police say the car thief who snatched a Toyota from Warren Street on Thursday night returned it by yesterday morning — and left a $100 bill inside for the trouble.

Lt. Athur Yeo said police received a report at about 11 p.m. Thursday that a woman’s 2011 Toyota Corolla had been stolen from outside of 19 Warren St. sometime in the last 45 minutes. The woman’s mother was the last one to see it.

Although nobody witnessed the theft, the woman said she suspected her ex-boyfriend might have had keys to the vehicle.

At 7:44 a.m. yesterday, the woman contacted police to report the vehicle had been returned — and that she was now $100 the richer.

The woman has declined to press charges, Yeo said.

“Apparently the $100 enticement worked,” he said.
