500 run in Salem's first Festivus 5K

---- — SALEM — More than 500 runners took part in the first Festivus 5K for Autism, a Festivus-themed run through Salem on Sunday.

The race, named for the alternative December holiday made famous by “Seinfeld,” was organized by Parents United of Salem and raised $10,000 for the Autism Society. Participants were encouraged to run in costume.

First overall male and female winners of the 3.1-mile race were Kevin Hankens of Salem (18:05) and Katie Cooper of Marblehead (19:05).

Finz Seafood & Grill hosted the post-race party. Sponsors included Finz, Salem Five, EBSCO Publishing, Dribbble, New England Running Co., Bernard’s Jewelers and North Shore Road Race Guide. Parents United of Salem and Festivus 5K are now accepting sponsors for 2013.
