Salem man survives jump from bridge

BEVERLY — A 58-year-old Salem man jumped off the Beverly-Salem bridge and was plucked out of the water by Beverly harbormasters yesterday afternoon, officials said.

Deputy fire Chief Michael Acciavatti said the man survived the jump and appeared to have no broken bones, lacerations or other serious injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to Beverly Hospital.

Acciavatti said the man jumped from about the middle of the bridge into the waters below around 4 p.m.

Two members of the Beverly harbormaster’s staff, whose office is nearby at the foot of the bridge, hopped into their boat and quickly pulled the man out of the water, he said. Police were withholding the man’s identity until his family was notified.
