Man stabbed in early morning Salem brawl

SALEM — A Saturday-morning ruckus outside of the Bangkok Paradise on Washington Street ended with one man turning up at the Salem Hospital emergency room with a stab wound.

The wound was non-life threatening, according to police, and detectives are pursuing the matter.

Police Sgt. David Tucker responded around 12:56 a.m. to a report of a "large, unruly group" and arrived to find about 50 people on the street, involved in fights, running to or from the battle. The log indicates that most of them ran away as more police cruisers began to arrive.

Police indicate that the stabbing happened across the street from the Bangkok Paradise. A fight on nearby Church Street was called in 15 minutes after the call to Washington Street. The stabbing and the fight "involved Bangkok patrons," according to the police report.

Patrolmen Derek White and Robert Cunningham arrived at the parking lot on Church and Federal streets to find no fight was ongoing. About 20 people were dispersed, however, and one drunken man was placed into protective custody. He turned out to be wanted on two warrants.

News that a stabbing victim had arrived at the hospital reached police at 1:10 a.m.

The incident is under investigation by Detective Thomas Brennan.
