Rainfall was the big story in June’s weather

By Arthur A. Francis

---- — This year June temperatures averaged just about normal. The highest temperature for the month was 96 degrees on the 24th, while we dropped to 47 cool degrees on the 7th.

Rainfall was the headliner this year. June gave us copious amounts. We had 17 days with rain, much of it from tropical downpours that flooded streets and homes locally. From the 6th to the 8th, we had over 3 inches of rain here in Salem. Thunderstorms were no strangers. We had six days that produced these storms, some with an abundance of thunder, lightning and damaging winds.

Indeed, our temperatures climbed higher and we experienced our first heat wave of the season (defined as three days in a row that hit 90 degrees or more), on the 23rd, 24th and 25th. When the weather permitted, the warmer temperatures and occasional bright sun brought many of us to local beaches.

Now July has arrived with some early morning rain. This month is usually our warmest of the year. Normally our daytime high temperatures will climb into the low to mid-80s, while dropping to the mid-60s by sunrise. The warm temperatures continue throughout the month.

When we check our records for the past 34 years, we have had many readings (10 days) as high as 100 degrees or more. We experienced our highest July temperatures — 102 degrees — four times. These high readings were observed in July 1977, 1993, 1995 and 2011. On the other hand, our lowest temperature was 44 degrees in 1988.

We still can have some of those pleasant interludes of welcome sea breezes. They are not as cool as our springtime sea breezes, since the ocean is somewhat warmer now, but we can be thankful for their delightful relief.

Usually our rainfall for July is about 31/2 inches. However, we had as much as 8.03 inches in 2009. In contrast, we had a very dry July in 1997 when we received only 0.94 inches of rain.

Now it’s time for that vacation. Enjoy!
