Ladies of Salem return -- with some new friends

SALEM — The ladies are back for another summer.

Sixteen ladies, fashioned after the figureheads that adorned the bows of sailing ships, are being installed throughout the city this month. Although the figures all came from the same fiberglass form, each has been designed by a local artist and has its own personality and theme.

It’s the second summer for The Lady of Salem public art project. This summer, five new figureheads are joining the original ladies from last year. One of the new figures was designed and painted by the Girls Today program at Salem Academy Charter School.

They will all stay up through mid-October.
