---- — BEVERLY — Police arrested a man who was allegedly igniting a lighter while drunk near the pumps of a gas station on Cabot Street on Monday afternoon.
Vincent J. Peluso, 64, of 93 Cabot St., Beverly, was taken into custody on a charge of disorderly conduct after police responded to a 4:11 p.m. report of an intoxicated man in a knit cap using a lighter near the Hess station pumps at 295 Cabot St.
Officer Dave Costa said in an email that when officers responded to the scene, a woman told them she had been about to call the station with the same complaint “and pointed out Peluso, now standing across the street.”
The man fit the description first reported to police, Costa said.
“When Peluso saw officers looking at him, he immediately started walking away,” said Costa, adding that when officers caught up to him, he “lay down on the ground” for no apparent reason.
“He was arrested at that time for being a disorderly person by causing alarm to patrons of the gas station,” Costa said.
It was unclear why the man was using the lighter to begin with, Costa said.
