Man sentenced for role in marijuana and gambling ring

PEABODY — A Peabody man tied to a large-scale gambling and marijuana distribution ring on the North Shore was sentenced to two years in jail yesterday after admitting that he had been storing more than 100 pounds of pot in his Peabody home.

Michele Grieco, 52, was charged with marijuana trafficking and conspiracy after a raid on his home in June 2010.

The raid was one in a series of search warrants executed that day, following a wiretap investigation into two alleged major organized crime figures, Mark Rossetti of East Boston and Joseph Giallanella of North Andover, according to a statement of the case.

Grieco made his initial appearance in court yesterday to plead to reduced charges as part of an agreement with prosecutors from the attorney general’s office.

Salem Superior Court Judge Howard Whitehead accepted the plea agreement, which calls for Grieco to serve two years in the house of correction, to be followed by three years of probation.

During the June 17, 2010, raid on Grieco’s home, police also found packaging materials, a scale and financial records that indicated his role in the enterprise.

More than 30 individuals were charged as part of the investigation, which spanned multiple counties in eastern Massachusetts.
