Police probe bank robbery

SALEM — Police say a robber made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after a holdup at the Eastern Bank on Congress Street yesterday afternoon.

Shortly before 2 p.m., a “medium-skinned” Hispanic man walked into the bank at 19 Congress St. and showed a note to a teller demanding money, said Lt. Scott Englehardt.

It was unknown whether the suspect showed a weapon during the incident and Englehardt said he may have fled in a taxi after leaving the bank. The man was additionally described as having brown hair and being between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8.

According to the incident log, officers responded to the bank at 1:52 p.m. and determined that it had already been locked by employees following the robbery.

Police checked the area on foot — including near the Victoria’s Station restaurant on Wharf Street — but found nothing suspicious.

Police are investigating.
