SALEM — A call about a fight between a son and his mother's boyfriend led police to the discovery of more than an ounce of cocaine Wednesday evening, prosecutors say.
Diomedes Junior Lugo, 20, of 15 Leach St., Salem, could face a minimum mandatory five years in state prison if found guilty of cocaine trafficking, one of six charges he is now facing.
Police were called to Lugo's home by his mother shortly after 6 p.m., after Lugo got into a fight with his mother's boyfriend.
When police arrived, they could find neither man. Eventually, they did find Lugo, hiding behind a workbench in the basement, according to a police report.
When police went to frisk him for any weapons, Lugo put up a fight, struggling and trying to pull away. When police finally got him into custody, he began crying, admitting that the large lump in his pocket was a package of cocaine.
Police found just over 1 ounce (28.9 grams) of cocaine, as well as cash and a cell phone they believe he was using to conduct transactions.
In addition to the trafficking charge, Lugo is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and a school zone violation.
He's being held on $10,000 cash bail and is due back in court on Jan. 28.
