---- — BEVERLY — Capt. Chris Negrotti will officially become acting police chief when Chief Mark Ray retires on Sept. 13, Mayor Bill Scanlon announced yesterday.

Negrotti has been with the Beverly Police Department for 28 years. He was promoted to captain three years ago and has served since then as the department’s patrol commander and executive officer.

The announcement did not come as a surprise, as Scanlon had said weeks ago that Negrotti would become acting chief.

Negrotti will also be a candidate to become the permanent chief. Scanlon said the city has begun the search for a new chief and will conduct a “broad outside search,” as well as considering candidates from within the department.

Scanlon also announced that Lt. Bill Terry will serve as an acting captain and Sgt. Philip McCarthy will serve as an acting lieutenant until a new chief is appointed.

“We wish departing Chief Ray and his family well and thank Chief Ray for his faithful service,” Scanlon said in the press release.
