Boy to be charged in Mack Park fire

SALEM — A 14-year-old boy from the Mack Park neighborhood will be summonsed to juvenile court on charges connected to an Aug. 13 fire.

The boy, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, will be charged with malicious burning of property, according to police Capt. Thomas Griffin.

The arson fire damaged a portable toilet and scoreboard at a city softball field at Mack Park.

“We’re talking about a few thousand dollars worth of damage,” Griffin said.

The boy was reported to police by his parents.

“Fortunately, these parents did the right thing,” Griffin said.

Mack Park also was the scene of a shooting in July. Police said no arrests have been made in that case.
