Man arrested on 10 charges after foot chase

SALEM — Police say a man who was breaking into vehicles early yesterday morning was arrested on 10 charges after he led officers on a chase through backyards that ended on Marlborough Road.

Randolph Grosvenor Jr., 40, of 868 Canterbury St., Roslindale, was arrested on charges of attempting to commit a crime, possession of burglarious tools, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, receiving stolen property over $250, malicious destruction of property over $250, illegal possession of a class A substance, giving a false name to a police officer, breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, and violating the city’s knife ordinance, according to the incident log.

He was also wanted on warrants out of Lynn and Brighton.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Marlborough and Sable roads after a 3:18 a.m. report that a man with a flashlight had been seen looking into motor vehicles.

When Grosvenor saw police arrive, he dropped a bag that he had stolen after smashing a vehicle’s window, then fled the scene, leaving a screwdriver in the window of a second vehicle he had been attempting to enter, said Lt. Mary Butler.

The foot chase lasted about five to seven minutes and ended when officers arrested Grosvenor at 160 Marlborough Road. Butler said that when Grosvenor was taken into custody, he had glass in his pocket from the first vehicle, along with heroin and a knife.

Grosvenor gave two false names to officers before they determined his true identity, Butler said.
