Rollover causes traffic backups in Peabody

PEABODY — A tractor trailer tipped on its side yesterday afternoon on Route 1, spilling demolition debris and causing traffic backups.

The driver of the truck was turning off Route 1 north at the jug handle to go south when the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m., according to state police. The truck, pulling a live floor trailer, was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane were closed as tow trucks got the truck back on its side and the debris was cleared.

The Peabody Fire Department and state Department of Transportation workers also responded to the accident, state police said.

The ramp from Interstate 95 south to Route 1 was shut down and traffic going south on Route 1 was diverted onto Pine Street. Both Peabody and Danvers police assisted in redirecting traffic.

Route 1 was reopened at 4:25 p.m., but crews continued to clean up for about an hour after that, according to state police.
