---- — SALEM — Police say a detective was hospitalized yesterday after he was stabbed in the face with an eyeliner pencil during an altercation with two female juveniles.
The incident happened late in the afternoon, when Detective Peter Baglioni, 58, pulled up to the front of the police station to bring two 14- and 15-year-old girls inside, said Officer James Walker. The 15-year-old was being brought in on warrants; the 14-year-old had been arrested for disorderly conduct. Neither was handcuffed at the time.
After Baglioni and the girls got out of the cruiser, the 15-year-old took a 6-inch eyeliner pencil from her purse and “harpooned” him in the face near his left eye, Walker said.
The girls fled but were quickly apprehended.
Baglioni, a 30-odd-year veteran of the department, was taken by ambulance to Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he was treated and released by last night.
The girls were transported to secure facilities in Lowell and Worcester, Walker said, adding that he expected both would be charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
