Salem man charged in another T groping

BOSTON — A Salem man with a history of groping women on public transit, dating back to his teens, is facing charges that he’s done it again, this time to a woman riding the MBTA Green Line last December.

Dane Mullin, 27, a Level 3 sex offender, pleaded not guilty in Boston Municipal Court Tuesday to a charge of indecent assault and battery stemming from the Dec. 17 incident, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said yesterday.

Prosecutors allege that on that morning, the woman and Mullin, whom she did not know, were on the same Green Line trolley between Haymarket and Government Center when he groped her.

The woman got off the trolley at the next stop and notified T employees.

She provided a description and police looked at surveillance images and information from other police departments to identify Mullin, prosecutors said in a press release announcing the arrest.

Though the woman was not able to conclusively identify Mullin, he gave police a statement in which he admitted to touching the woman, prosecutors said.

Mullin is being held on a combination of $8,000 bail and on warrants from Salem District Court, where he will be facing charges of failing to register as a sex offender and an assault and battery charge stemming from an arrest last January, as well as on probation detainers.

At the time of his arrest, Mullin was on probation for two counts of indecent assault and battery after incidents in 2011 involving two women at North Station who were also assaulted. Mullin had served part of a 21/2 year sentence in that case, and was due to get off on probation in July. Now, prosecutors may seek to revoke Mullin’s probation in those cases.

Transit Police may also be bringing additional charges against Mullin as a result of their ongoing investigation into other groping complaints, prosecutors said.
