Police: Intruder with large knife enters Salem apartment

SALEM — Police say a stranger with a large knife walked right into a First Street man’s apartment early yesterday morning when the man answered a knock at his door.

Officers responded 4 First St. after a report of the incident at 12:05 a.m. The resident said he had heard a “soft” knock and then opened the door without looking through his peephole, according to the incident log.

“That is when he observed an unknown black male, with a large knife, and a white female,” wrote police. “The male told him to get out of his way.”

The man left his apartment with the two people still in it and phoned police. Officers were on scene within minutes but a search of the apartment and area didn’t yield anybody suspicious.

“We entered the apartment and checked all areas, no one else was seen,” wrote police.

Nothing from the apartment appeared to be missing after the incident.

Police advised the man, who was not reported to have been injured or threatened during the incident, to “keep the door locked” and call for help again if the people returned.
