Raising the roof on history

IPSWICH — It was a scene right out of the 17th century.

The timber frame was raised Saturday for a re-creation of a small house from 1657, which is being built with traditional tools, materials and construction methods as a live, ongoing exhibit for the Ipswich Museum. The house, when completed, will show how a common person lived at the time, often in a one-room house. This one is being built to match a description in town records of a home built for Alexander Knight — and it will be called the Alexander Knight House.

The house can be seen on the lawn next to the Whipple House at 54 S. Main St.
