UPDATE: The woman who claimed she was kidnapped by two masked men admitted to police today that she made up the story to avoid being arrested for drunken driving. Click here for more on this story.

BEVERLY -- Police said a 24-year-old Beverly woman was abducted from her apartment by two masked men and left locked in the trunk of her car on Route 128 early this morning.

The victim was discovered by two passing motorists who thought the car had been in an accident. The passersby heard a woman locked in the trunk of her hatchback vehicle and smashed the window to let her out, police said.

The woman was taken to Beverly Hospital with minor scratches and bruises but refused medical treatment, according to police.

The incident took place at about 3:30 this morning. The victim told police that two masked men broke into her apartment, abducted her, and ordered her to get into her car and drive.

The car eventually pulled over to the side of Route 128 north near Exit 17 in Wenham.

Police did not identify the victim. The suspects are at large and police are investigating.
