---- — DANVERS — A mulch fire at the Liberty Tree Mall this afternoon forced the evacuation of a portion of the mall as the fire spread to a corner of the A.C. Moore crafts store and roof, fire Chief Kevin Farrell said.
At 12:51 p.m., the department received a report of a mulch fire outside the store, which is located at the front right corner of the mall at 100 Independence Way. It was the far right corner of the building that caught fire.
No injuries were reported.
While the mall is made from noncombustible materials, the fire spread to materials inside the wall such as Styrofoam, Farrell said. The fire found its way up through voids in the wall and smoke could be seen coming from the roof. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and then checked to see if the fire had extended inside the wall. It took an hour for the firefighters to fight the fire and check for extensions.
The wing that includes A.C. Moore was evacuated, Farrell said. People were allowed to stay in the rest of the mall and in the nearby Best Buy.
Farrell said the department told mall management that mulch should be pulled at least 18 inches away from the buildings.
