SALEM — A Shrewsbury man has been charged with open and gross lewdness after police say he engaged in lewd acts while driving along North Street in Salem during rush hour yesterday.
Police believe Gene C. Verneque, 35, also was using his cellphone to record the reactions of women as they spotted him.
Police caught up with Verneque at the intersection of North and Essex streets at 8:22 a.m. after a woman called to report seeing him engaging in lewd acts inside his vehicle as he passed alongside her. She also told police she saw him holding up his cellphone toward her car, Lt. Scott Englehardt said last night.
Police are now hoping to have a look at the cellphone, which was found in his vehicle, broken in several pieces.
In the meantime, Verneque was expected to be released on personal recognizance once he managed to come up with a $40 bail clerk’s fee.
He is due in Salem District Court this morning for arraignment.
