Police arrest woman on heroin charge

SALEM — Police say a woman was arrested on a heroin charge yesterday after officers saw what they thought was a drug deal in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Highland Avenue.

Helene Sychampanaknone, 48, of 80 Essex St., Lynn, was arrested on a charge of illegal possession of a class A substance. She was also wanted on a warrant.

Officers in the Special Response Unit were on patrol in the parking lot at 450 Highland Ave. about 4 p.m. when they observed “a brief encounter between two parties that was believed to be a drug transaction,” police wrote in the incident log.

The officers then conducted a traffic stop on a red Dodge Durango and determined the operator — Sychampanaknone — was wanted on a warrant.

She was found to be in possession of a gram of heroin during the ensuing booking process, police wrote.

The Durango was later towed.
