Boxford brush blaze 'sizeable'

BOXFORD — Firefighters tackled a large brush fire on Middleton Road yesterday afternoon, but the effort to completely extinguish it was expected to last into today.

The Fire Department responded to the area of 94 Middleton Road after a resident reported coming across a fire while out for a walk about 2 p.m., said fire Chief Kerry Stickney.

Stickney called the fire “sizeable” and said it probably covered about eight to 10 acres. Firefighters initially hit the edges of the blaze so it wouldn’t spread further.

The site was expected to smolder overnight, as continuing to work on it in the dark would be too dangerous, Stickney said. The fire did not extend or threaten any structures, and there were no injuries.

Stickney said firefighters would return to the location this morning and that the fire had likely been burning for a while before it was spotted.

“I have a funny feeling it was going sometime yesterday,” he said, meaning Tuesday.

It was unknown how the blaze began.
