MARBLEHEAD — A local 61-year-old woman was killed in a late-morning multi-vehicle accident on Route 128 in Burlington yesterday, state police said.
Jill Matsumoto of 14 Rose Ave. was killed after the 1996 Lexus she was driving struck a traffic sign on the side of the ramp from Route 3A to Route 128 north in Burlington, then traveled across all four lanes of the busy highway, striking the guardrail.
"The Lexus then started to spin and struck a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer operated by 60-year-old James Martin of Seabrook, N.H., which was in the second travel lane from the right side of the roadway," reads a press statement released last night by the Massachusetts State Police.
"After making contact with the Blazer, the Lexus continued spinning and was struck by a Chevrolet C5500 box truck driven by 34-year-old Christopher Brundrett of Plainville," state police say. The vehicles stopped in the two left travel lanes, next to the median. Those lanes were closed for about two hours yesterday as police investigated the crash.
Troopers from the state police barracks in Danvers responded to the crash just minutes before noon. Trooper Mark Wheeler handled the preliminary investigation, the press statement adds.
Matsumoto and Brundrett were transported to Lahey Clinic in Burlington, where Matsumoto was pronounced dead and Brundrett was being treated for a serious injury.
A woman answering the door at Matsumoto's home last night declined to comment. She did not identify herself.
"The facts and circumstances of the crash, including what caused Matsumoto to strike the sign and lose control of her vehicle, remain under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police, with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section," the press statement says.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Burlington Fire Department, Burlington police Department and Massachusetts Highway Department.
