Labor Day game raised $8,500 for Jimmy Fund

PEABODY — The Jimmy Fund has $8,500 more to fight cancer, thanks to the police union's 53rd annual Labor Day baseball game.

Organizer Stephanie Lane said she was pleased by both the attendance of about 300 and the generosity.

"The day was beautiful," she said. "We had a great, great turnout. We were very excited."

Lane said the Labor Day fundraiser surpassed last year's by nearly $1,000, quite a feat in difficult financial times.

"The community, in general, has been outstanding in their support," the officer said. "We can't even thank them enough for helping kids with cancer."

Much of the food and materials to pull off the free event was donated by Peabody companies, including AB Carnes, Firebull Restaurant, Pepperidge Farms at Hannaford and U.S. Food Services, she said. Most of the union's donation comes from food sales, she added.

"We did extremely well, which we're very happy about considering the economic times," Lane said.

About 25 volunteers helped organize the annual game, and another 25 donated their time as players on either the North Shore Old Timers or the Peabody Police team.

"I think really it's important people know their generosity is appreciated," Lane said.
