Service Academy Night for high-schoolers and parents is Wednesday

DANVERS — Twenty years ago the U.S. Air Force Academy and the United States Military Academy at West Point went to Capt. Ed Bryant for help — they needed a better way to reach out to high school students. Bryant, who was also involved in recruiting, suggested they join forces, and that year 300 students and parents showed up to learn about a future in the military.

This year's Service Academy Night will be on tomorrow at the Danversport Yacht Club. There will be representatives from U.S. academies, ROTCs and many others. All high school students, grades nine through 12, are invited to bring their parents and learn about military opportunities after high school.

Bryant, a retired Coast Guard captain from Ipswich, will help parents by telling them certain questions to ask and discussing the nomination process.

Although students may wait until senior year to look into a military education, Bryant says it is better to explore the option early.

"We want them early so they take the right math classes and do the right thing," Bryant said.

The event goes from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
