Driver in accident to be charged with DUI

SALEM — One of the drivers involved in a two-car crash on Lafayette Street on Thursday night that sent both drivers to a Boston hospital will be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, Salem police said.

Cheryl Wall, 38, of 19 Charlotte Road, Swampscott, will be summonsed to court and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, driving to endanger, driving with a suspended license and a marked lanes violation.

Wall was driving her 2009 blue Honda Accord on Lafayette Street around 10:30 p.m. when she crossed lanes on the two-lane road and struck a car driven by Matthew Coraccio, who was heading in the opposite direction, a police report describing the accident said.

Coraccio, 25, of 21A County Way, Beverly, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was listed in good condition yesterday. Wall was treated and released from Mass General.

Coraccio's car, a 2001 Honda Accord, had its front, driver's-side wheel torn off. Coraccio was trapped inside and had to be freed by Salem firefighters using extrication tools.

Wall crashed into a stone wall on Raymond Road. She had an odor of alcohol on her person and her speech was slurred, the police report said.
