Salem man arrested after bouncer threatened

BEVERLY — A Salem man will be arraigned today on charges he threatened a bouncer with a knife at a Rantoul Street bar on Saturday.

Police say Sean G. Ryan, 33, of 2 Pierce Ave., flashed a silver knife at the bouncer working at Overtime bar and said he'd stab him in the face.

Ryan is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. He's being held on $10,000 bail and will be arraigned at Salem District Court.

Police Sgt. Lawrence Van Liere Jr. said police received a report of the assault shortly after midnight Saturday from the bar's owner.

The owner told police one of his employees was assaulted and gave him a description of the culprit, who had a broken front tooth. The owner also mentioned that someone was following him. Police said a man followed Ryan in the area of Park Street and Railroad Avenue but lost him.

More than an hour later, Patrolmen Donald Call and William Barror spotted a man fitting the description by the owner nearby at One Stop Market.

Police said Ryan agreed to let police search for any weapons but police found none. Van Liere said Ryan acknowledged he was at the bar and did get into an argument with the bouncer. The bouncer positively identified Ryan as the man who threatened him.
