City to sell firetruck to Hamilton for $10K

BEVERLY — The city plans to sell its old ladder firetruck to the town of Hamilton for $10,000.

Mayor Bill Scanlon asked the City Council on Monday night to declare the truck, known as Ladder One, as surplus property so that it can be sold.

The city has replaced Ladder One, a 1988 vehicle, with a new combination ladder and engine truck. The new truck cost $867,000 and arrived last month at fire headquarters on Hale Street.

Scanlon said the Fire Department no longer needs the old ladder truck and has no room to keep it. The city was offered $7,500 as a trade-in, but that was topped by Hamilton's offer of $10,000, the mayor said.

Scanlon said there is "added value" in selling the ladder truck to Hamilton because Hamilton is usually the first out-of-town ladder truck to respond to Beverly during incidents that require mutual aid.

This is not the first time the city has sold one of its firetrucks to Hamilton. Scanlon said Beverly also sold its old Ladder Two truck from the North Beverly station to Hamilton.

The City Council referred Scanlon's request to its Finance and Property Committee.
