Police cite 3 bars and nab 5 drivers in alcohol check
BEVERLY — Police issued violations to three bars and arrested five drivers for operating under the influence of alcohol during enforcement programs last weekend.
During "Operation Last Call" from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, officers gave warnings to the Sports Page Pub when they saw an intoxicated person leaving, to Kitty O'Sheas for serving two patrons who were intoxicated and to the Anchor Pub for serving someone more than two drinks.
"This initiative targets specific bars that have been identified as having been the last establishment to serve an alcoholic beverage to a convicted drunk driver," police spokesman John McCarthy said. "It also targets establishments known to be the source of community problems associated with intoxication."
In addition to the three bars, officers observed China Jade, One Stop Market on Rantoul Street, Brimbal Avenue Sunoco, The Pickled Onion and Not Your Average Joe's.
The program is run in conjunction with the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
In a separate initiative Saturday, Beverly police worked with state police at a sobriety checkpoint on Cabot and Water streets at the base of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Between midnight and 2 a.m., all cars were stopped. State police detained nine drivers for investigation and arrested five for operating under the influence of alcohol, McCarthy said.
