Schools might crack down on texting

SALEM — Cell phone use in school is no "LOL" matter.

"LOL," a common abbreviation for "laugh out loud," is one of the many expressions used in cell phone text messaging, a form of communication that has become ubiquitous among students, according to Salem Superintendent William Cameron.

The School Committee's policy subcommittee will soon consider an amendment to the student cell phone use policy, which "needs to be brought into the text-messaging age," according to Cameron.

The policy was drafted in an age when text messaging was not considered to be a significant issue.

Text messaging, called texting, is the exchange of brief written messages between cell phones.

The current policy prohibits students from using cell phones during school hours, according to the Salem Public Schools Policy Manual.

Until the Policy Subcommittee meets, it is not yet clear what, if any, changes will be made to the policy.
