PEABODY —

A Peabody man was killed early this morning when the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a parked tow truck on Walnut Street.

Daniel Walker, 31, of 84 Endicott St., Apt. 2, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Essex District Attorney spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan.

The driver of the vehicle, Michael J. Fowler, 38, of 3 Highland Terrace, Apt. 2, in Peabody, has been charged with felony motor vehicle homicide while driving under the influence, Monahan said.

Fowler has also been charged with drunk driving, second offense; leaving the scene of a personal injury accident with death resulting; and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Peabody District Court.

Fowler suffered minor injuries, Monahan said.

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. Friday in the area of 86 Walnut St. Fowler was driving a 2010 Hyundai. The car crashed into an unoccupied parked flatbed tow truck, with the impact on the passenger side of the Hyundai, Monahan said.

One of the first responders immediately called for backup, saying there was head trauma involved and someone had fled the scene. Police found Fowler around Tracey Street, with blood on his face, according to police scanner reports.
