---- — BEVERLY — Daniel Fishman admits that he’s raised “one one-thousandth” of the money that John Tierney and Richard Tisei amassed in the last quarter of their race for the 6th Congressional District seat.
But now Fishman can say he has pulled even with the two candidates in at least one respect — he has gathered enough signatures to earn a spot on the November ballot.
The Libertarian candidate from Beverly officially entered the race this week by turning in more than the required 2,000 signatures to put his name on the ballot, according to the Massachusetts secretary of state’s office.
Fishman, a 44-year-old software architect who has never run for political office, will take on Tierney, the incumbent Democrat from Salem, and Tisei, a Republican from Wakefield.
“I’m excited,” Fishman said. “It was tremendous experience to go and gather signatures. I spent a lot of time talking to people, and everybody agrees that Congress is doing a terrible job right now. The No. 1 thing people said was, ‘I’m glad that somebody else is running.’”
Fishman said he has raised only $400 so far and has contributed $4,000 of his own money to his campaign. He said he will not accept money from corporations.
Asked about his chances of winning, Fishman said, “I equate where I am now with about where Scott Brown was when he won the Republican primary. I really do believe there’s a growing sense of frustration with how Republicans and Democrats are changing things.”
The Tierney and Tisei camps both said that Fishman’s entry into the race will not affect their strategy.
“I don’t think it changes our game plan one bit,” Tierney spokesman Grant Herring said. “John Tierney is the only one in this race that has a record for standing up for middle-class families in the 6th District, and that’s what’s going to decide this race.”
Tisei also said his game plan will not change.
“Most people recognize that if you’re tired of John Tierney and you want a change in Congress, there is one viable option,” he said. “The amount of support I’ve been receiving has been terrific so far. I think people view me as the best viable candidate.”
