Police: Gunshots followed home invasion

---- — SALEM — Police say suspects in a Grove Street home invasion fired gunshots as they made their getaway on Sunday night.

Officers responded to 79 Grove St. after a 10:36 p.m. report that three men had pushed their way into a second-floor apartment and then fired off shots in the street afterward.

Capt. Thomas Griffin said it was unclear what the trio was looking for or if they stole anything from inside the unit, where a woman was home at the time.

He said the men fired three shots from a handgun or handguns, likely in an attempt “facilitate their escape” by scaring people who were gathered at both ends of the narrow street. The victim had followed them outside.

Three casings were later found in the area, Griffin said.

The men were last seen on Grove Street in a gray, newer-model Nissan with damage to its rear bumper on the driver’s side.

There were no injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.
