'Zumbathon' a benefit for autism center

BEVERLY — The public is invited to dance, exercise or just hang out at an event in support of the Austim Support Center.

The event, known as a “Zumbathon,” will be held Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the YMCA Teen Center at 254 Essex St., Beverly.

The Zumbathon will include Zumba workouts, a combination of exercise and dance movements, conducted by seven certified instructors.

“People can dance as much as they want to, or they don’t have to dance at all,” said Judith Doherty, a member of the Autism Support Center’s parent advisory council.

The Zumbathon is being held as part of Autism Awareness Month. The Austim Support Center, a program of Northeast Arc based in Danvers, serves more than 2,220 families from Salisbury to Littleton, Doherty said.

In addition to Zumba workouts, the event will include samples of gluten-free and other products, as well as raffle prizes for spas, fitness classes, Zumba wear and a getaway.

Participants can also sign up to get a “Driving Autism Awareness” specialty license plate, which needs 3,000 presales before it can go into production.

The suggested donation to attend the event is $20. For more information, send an email to jgdoherty01915@yahoo.com.
