More than 1,000 earn degrees at Salem State

SALEM — More than 1,000 graduating seniors were awarded degrees Saturday during commencement ceremonies for Salem State University.

It was Salem State's 201st commencement, but this is the first year it has awarded degrees as a university, rather than a college.

Because of the large number of graduates, degrees were awarded in two ceremonies at the O'Keefe Athletic Center. Graduate degrees were awarded in a separate ceremony last Thursday.

Commencement address: David Fanning, executive producer, "Frontline"

Honorary degrees: Patricia Driscoll, COO, Girls Inc.; Richard Bane, president, BaneCare Management; David Fanning, executive producer, "Frontline"

College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education

Number of graduates: 579

Student address: Herve Mukeba Mukuna of Democratic Republic of the Congo

Commencement address: Margaret McKenna, president, Wal-Mart Foundation

Honorary degrees: James Brett, president and CEO, The New England Council; James Crosby, founder, Crosby's Marketplace; and Margaret McKenna, president, Wal-Mart Foundation
