---- — SALEM — Salem police are searching for a suspect who, they say, broke into a home on Columbus Avenue on Tuesday and stole a Mac laptop, a diamond necklace and assorted costume jewelry between 10:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. police said.

Officers obtained a report from residents at 6:29 p.m. Tuesday, saying the suspect’s entry appeared to have been made through a rear sitting-room window that had a damaged lock.

The suspect placed a wooden chair outside the window and climbed in through the window after breaking the lock, according to a police log entry.

Reported stolen was a gray MacBook Pro laptop worth $2,500, a diamond-encased sapphire necklace worth $1,500 and a small cardboard box containing assorted costume jewelry, worth $50.

Salem police have yet to identify a suspect, and the case is still under investigation.
