Well-known Ipswich man dies in crash

IPSWICH — A well-known Ipswich man was killed in a single-car crash at the intersection of Essex and Candlewood roads last night.

Brian H. Lombard, 72, was taken to Beverly Hospital at about 6:40 p.m. where he succumbed to his injuries, according to a press release issued by the Ipswich Police Department.

Lombard began his career in law enforcement with the Ipswich Police Department and was later appointed to the Massachusetts State Police.

"The men and women of the Ipswich Police Department join with the members of the Massachusetts State Police in the loss of their brother officer, Staff Sgt. Brian H. Lombard," the release stated.

The accident remains under investigation by Ipswich and state police.
