---- — SALEM — A memorial honoring the Massachusetts servicemen and servicewomen who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan is coming here this weekend.
The “moving memorial,” a touch-screen video kiosk, is sponsored by the Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund, an organization of Gold Star families, veterans, firefighters and others trying to build a permanent memorial in the state.
It will be on display at the Salem Waterfront Hotel beginning today at noon and extending through Sunday. There will be a ceremony marking the event tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the hotel.
“All of the names of the fallen are there,” said Christina Ayube of Salem, the mother of Army Sgt. James Ayube II, a medic who was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in 2010. “We have 167 fallen soldiers.”
The memorial will be staffed by Christina Ayube and other members of the Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund, along with representatives from local veterans organizations.
“This is definitely something James would want and would expect his family to do,” Ayube said.
The interactive video tribute will have photos and biographical information on state residents, including many from the North Shore, who were killed in action or died in service to their country since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The display is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for the memorial fund.
“We are always looking for donations and sponsors,” Ayube said.
The group is holding a benefit dinner Dec. 7 in Boston.
