Hurricane Sandy causes more closures, damage

Peabody schools closed Tuesday; Salem opens 2 hours late

North Shore communities continue to brace for the worst as Hurricane Sandy makes her way over New England this afternoon.

Danvers, Ipswich and Beverly are among the communities to have postponed yard waste, recycling and trash pickup by a day. In Salem, City Hall and the library have closed due to the storm. Both the Northshore and Liberty Tree malls closed at 1 p.m. Peabody schools will be closed Tuesday as well. Salem will open two hours late.

Scanner reports have been buzzing all afternoon about trees and wires down in various communities. Peabody police reported earlier that a fallen tree was blocking one lane of Route 1 south, near Lake Street. Earlier this afternoon, Danvers police reported that Route 114 at the Middleton-Danvers line is down to one lane due to a fallen tree. In Beverly, emergency personnel are on the scene of a reported transformer fire on Old Rubbly Road.

As of 2 p.m., the MBTA has suspended all service, but the state Department of Transportation noted that the Tobin Bridge remains open with tolls waived.

National Grid has reported power outages in Topsfield, Hamilton, Swampscott, Salem and Essex, according to its interactive outage map.
