BEVERLY — The Beverly High string band serenaded, the school chorus sang, and the state treasurer, Tim Cahill, signed a big novelty check in a ceremony yesterday in the library of almost-completed new Beverly High School.
The check, which was exactly $46,826,551, is the state's portion of the cost of the new school, located next to Beverly's current aging high school. Some classes are already held in the new building, but students will move in completely on Nov. 30.
"This is a beautiful building and a testament to your commitment to the children of this community," Cahill said to the 30 or so in attendance, who included legislators, Mayor Bill Scanlon and Superintendent Marie Galinski. "You really should be thanked and rewarded."
Thanks and praise were heaped heavily on Scanlon, Cahill, Beverly state Rep. Mary Grant, state Sen. Fred Berry and others during the hourlong ceremony.
To date, the Massachusetts School Building Authority has paid about $11 million toward the school cost, said Katherine Craven, MSBA's executive director. In total, the state is paying just over 58 percent of the new school's $81.5 million price tag.
