Salem police busy after Lynn shooting

SALEM — A shooting in Lynn kept local police busy early yesterday morning — both in assisting with the hunt for a suspect and keeping things orderly at Salem Hospital, where friends and family of the victim had gathered into a “rowdy” crowd.

The incident began at 11:58 p.m., when Lynn police received a report that a man had been shot near the intersection of Essex and West Green streets, an officer in that city said.

Shortly after midnight, Swampscott and Lynn police pursued a gray SUV thought to be involved in the shooting into the area of Moffatt Road in south Salem, where the suspect or suspects ditched the vehicle and fled on foot, according to the incident log.

While officers scoured that area, police were also called to the emergency room at Salem Hospital, where the unidentified victim had arrived for treatment and the victim’s kin had gathered together, causing a “great deal of commotion,” according to the log.

Lynn police were on scene at the hospital to conduct a follow-up investigation and requested extra assistance, as did hospital security. A Salem State University officer was called to the scene because most other units were involved in the search for the suspects.

The crowd cleared out after the victim was MedFlighted to an undisclosed Boston hospital, and two “involved persons” were brought back to Lynn by police, according to the log.

Despite a heavy police presence and the activation of the state police’s Air Wing, no suspects were apprehended and the search was called off shortly before 4 a.m.
