SALEM — Salem State College will hold a community meeting Monday to discuss environmental tests it is conducting on its central campus.
"Slightly" elevated levels of a potentially harmful chemical were detected in one test site near the building that houses the Bertolon School of Business, the music department and the interim library, the college said in an e-mail to neighbors.
Tests of indoor air quality inside that building and at other outdoor test sites on the campus were "within acceptable levels," the college said.
More testing is expected at the monitoring site where elevated levels were detected of a solvent once used at this former GTE Sylvania light plant.
The state Department of Environmental Protection has ordered new tests at a number of old project sites around the state to ensure they comply with new, stricter regulations, according to a spokesman for the state agency.
In many cases, the DEP is checking to see if the concentration of one chemical in groundwater exceeds current standards and if vapors have escaped into nearby buildings, according to a state website.
The DEP is reviewing the results from Salem State and has not determined whether there are any health or safety concerns, a DEP spokesman said.
The community meeting is Monday at 7 p.m. at the Enterprise Center.
