---- — IPSWICH — The residents boardwalk at Crane Beach is closed for scheduled repairs.
Jeff Putur, the town’s superintendent of the Cemetery and Parks Department, said the repairs have been in the making for about two years. The work will replace decking and failing supports for about 200 feet of the boardwalk, he said.
“Before we have an injury, we knew we needed to get this repaired,” he said.
Repairs have already been made to some of the supports. The work will take place from the parking lot to about the first seating area, Putur said.
He said this portion of the boardwalk has not been repaired since 1986, while the section closest to the ocean was replaced in 1996.
Putur said the repairs have nothing to do with last month’s winter storm that caused damage to the dunes.
The $22,000 to repair the boardwalk was approved through the town’s budget process. Town employees are doing the work, which is keeping the cost down, Putur said.
Putur said he expects the boardwalk to reopen in April, but the completion date depends on the weather this winter.
There are two other boardwalks on the property for people to access the beach. Both are owned by the Trustees of Reservations.
