Wenham Tea House hosts author visit

WENHAM — Connie Johnson Hambley had an idea for a novel swirling in her head for 16 years. She would write some of it over the years and then stop to focus on being a mom or to pursue other endeavors.

Now her self-published book, “The Charity,” is on the market.

A thriller, the book tells the story of Hamilton native Jessica Wyeth, who is prevented from taking her rightful position in the lucrative family business of high-stakes horse racing by her farm’s manager and top trainer, Gus Adams. When Gus is murdered, the evidence points to Jessica, who flees.

The book also includes scenes in Salem, Ipswich, Essex and Boston, Hambley said.

Hambley will speak about her book from 3 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the Wenham Tea House, 4 Monument St.

“I look forward to talking to folks in Jessica’s hometown about Hamilton, horses and, of course, heiresses,” said Hambley, a Rowley resident. She said she picked Hamilton for her setting because of its horse culture and because it is a “beautiful, quintessential New England town.”

As for the 16 years it took to make, she said, “it was a story that wouldn’t quiet until it was out. The folks who read it (before publication) loved it. They would keep saying, ‘Whatever happened to the book?’ and ‘It needs to get out there.’”
