Drum Majors for Justice honored

DANVERS — The 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner last night at the Danversport Yacht Club honored the recipients of the Drum Majors for Justice awards.

The dinner recognizes those who have made a commitment to social justice and aims to endow a scholarship in King’s name.

Those named Drum Majors for Justice are Kyriakos and Patricia Andrinopoulos and Theodore and Gloria Kougianos, the owners of New Brothers Restaurant and Deli in Danvers Square; Karen Devaney, Tammie King and David Gotts, the initiators of Challenger Baseball in Danvers; Gary Gill, for helping start the first North Shore Pride Parade in Salem; Sean McDaniel, a religious studies teacher at St. John’s Prep and an advocate for the LGBTQ youth community; and the Rev. Susan Morrison, the former senior pastor at Holy Trinity United Methodist in Danvers and an advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

Paul Marcus, the executive director of Community Change Inc., served as the keynote speaker. The Danvers High Chamber Singers and Follow Hymn Interfaith Choir performed at the dinner, sponsored by the Danvers Committee for Diversity.
