SALEM — A bill filed late last week would name the soon-to-be-renovated Salem Probate and Family Court building in honor of retired judge Thaddeus Buczko.
“He had quite a storied career,” said state Rep. John Keenan of Salem, the chief sponsor of the legislation. “There’s no question in my mind that he stands equal to some of the giants of that era whom we have honored.
“I think it’s a fitting way to pay tribute to him and thank him for his decades of public service.”
Buczko, 86, served at Salem Probate and Family Court for 15 years and was the presiding, or “first judge,” at the court. He also was a city councilor, state representative, Salem postmaster and state auditor.
The Probate Court building, which is scheduled to undergo a major renovation beginning next year, stands next to the J. Michael Ruane Judicial Center, a new state courthouse named in honor of the late state representative from Salem.
The main courtroom in the building is named for Samuel Zoll of Salem, the late chief justice of the Massachusetts District Courts.
State Sen. Joan Lovely is co-sponsoring the Buczko legislation.
